Offered to candidates who do not have a specific degree in Syariah or Usuluddin but are interested to do interdisciplinary research in their area of specialization and Islamic Studies. Priority is given to those with background in Islamic Studies such as Diploma in Syariah/Usuluddin offered by the Academy of Islamic Studies in collaboration with UMCCed. This programme offers research opportunity at master level for candidate with background from various diciplines either Islamic Studies or not.
This is a pure dissertation programme and there are no course modules for this programme. The medium of dissertation is in Malay or English, but under special circumstances, the Senate may approve the use of a language other than Bahasa Malaysia or English for the dissertation concerned.
Foreign candidates are required to:
Have at least IELTS Band 6 or TOEFL 550 if their first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction.
Or
Pass an English proficiency test approved by the University.
Language Requirements: Malay/Bahasa Malaysia
(a) Bahasa Malaysia Requirement for Malaysian Citizens A higher degree candidate must have a certain level of proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia to fulfill the conferment of degree requirement, that is a pass at the Malaysian Certificate of education or its equivalent or a Level III Certificate of Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia or a Level III of the University Intensive Bahasa Malaysia Certificate or a level equivalent to it. This is not an entry requirement but a conferment of degree requirement.
Candidates with a first degree from local Public Institutes of Higher Learning (IPTA) other than the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) and MARA University of Technology (UiTM) are exempted from this Bahasa Malaysia requirement.
(b) Bahasa Malaysia Requirement for Foreigners
All foreign candidates of higher degree are required to attend and pass the Bahasa Malaysia course run by the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics before the conferment of their Masters degree unless they have obtained a pass grade in Bahasa Malaysia at the Malaysian Certificate of Education level or Level III of the Bahasa Malaysia Proficiency Certificate or Level III of the University’s Intensive Bahasa Malaysia Certificate or a level equivalent to it, with the exception of candidates who have passed the Exemption Test that is also run by the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics at the beginning of every semester. The fee for the Bahasa Malaysia Exemption Test is RM50.00. Should the candidate pass the test concerned, they do not have to enrol in the Bahasa Malaysia course. The Exemption Test will be administered in the second week after the start of the semester.
The Bahasa Malaysia course is offered every semester by the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. The candidate can enrol for the Bahasa Malaysia course by choosing one of the ways below:
(a) Attend 2 hours of lecture each week for one semester, or
(b) Attend the Intensive Bahasa Malaysia course for 5 days that is 6 hours a day.
Candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance if they have fulfilled 75% attendance in this class. Only candidates who have fulfilled 75% attendance will be permitted to sit for the test. At the end of the course, candidates will be given a test to determine if they pass or fail.
This Master's programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidate's study, a dissertation must be submitted and upon successful defense of the dissertation, the candidate will be awarded a Master degree. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty.
Candidates are required to complete their studies within 8 semesters.
